Hylas 1 - Powered by Avanti Communications
HYLAS-1
On November 26th 2010, Ariane 5 was launched from The Guyana Space Centre in French Guyana. Its mission was to ensure the safe delivery of Intelsat 17 and HYLAS-1 into geostationary orbit around the Earth.

HYLAS-1 is now operational at an orbital location of 33.5º W. It provides broadband services to most of Europe and parts of northern Africa.

On August 2nd 2012, HYLAS-2 was launched. It is now fully operational serving MEA and Africa. HYLAS-3 is in the pipeline!

Installation Procedure
1 - Site Survey

The site survey involves a visit to your property to find a suitable place for the dish to be positioned. The dish can be mounted to a wall or attached to a ground-mount a distance from your property. The dish can be positioned almost anywhere so long as the cable run to the property is less than 100 metres.

When on site, we endeavour to find a suitable location for the dish such that it is as unobtrusive as possible whilst still giving a clear view of the satellite.

The site survey is usually conducted on a seperate day to the installation; however, if a suitable position is found then the installation can be completed on the same day if desired.

2 - Installation

After a successful site survey, we will arrange an installation date with you. The installation usually takes around 3 to 4 hours. Once installed, we do not usually need to return, everything should be good to go.

We will spend some time going through ways in which you can improve your internet experience by way of installing WiFi into your property. WiFi allows you to connect to the internet on mobile devices without needing to drag a cable.

3 - Activation

Activation of your system can take up to 1 hour after the system has been installed. You will have internet as soon as the installation is complete.

How it works
The service uses the new Hylas high power spot beam satellite2, owned by Avanti as well as terminals and ground stations from Hughes, the world leader in satellite communications. The system uses the most advanced coding and modulation techniques (similar to those now used for high definition broadcasting) to produce a more reliable connection and lower prices than could previously be achieved via satellite.

The system will cope even with the extreme weather conditions encountered in remote and mountainous regions by automatically sensing and adjusting its operation as required. The satellite is located at 33.5 degrees west and the system uses a medium sized 74cm elliptical dish.

Satellite does have lower fair usage policy data limits than ADSL but better than with 3G (mobile) and as with all broadband services, usage is shared across a number of users. Four levels of service are defined; consumer, consumer plus with static IP suitable for home or small office usage and Business, which gives lower overall contention rates and is suitable for medium and larger businesses or shared/community use. Finally Pay As you Go is available for e.g. Second Homes or occasional usage.

The great advantage of satellite is that it can deliver a reliable service where others currently cannot. More and more communities and businesses are looking to space for their answer to reliable, fast and future-proof internet.
