Television has always had the bandwidth to deliver high quality images and the Internet has struggled to keep up. Even larger screens and higher refresh rates are being planned that will keep the pressure on networks.

To deliver High Definition TV across broadband networks requires techniques from both Broadcast and Advanced Network Protocols and above all enough bandwidth. Video can be compressed but this takes time. When there is a need for live high quality images then there is not enough time to fully use all the compression tools and therefore more bandwidth is needed. This leads to the need for efficient mechanisms for delivering high quality images. Applications include medical imaging or local HD TV services.
